Greetings all who wrestle for the Kingdom,
Duck and Cover
When we were in grade school we learned a safety technique in response to a possible nuclear attack. We were told to “duck and cover”. There was a video and a cute song and we all practiced getting under our desks when a siren went off. I am not sure this would have been a useful action in light of an actual attack but we all learned and practiced thinking that this was how to stay safe if a bomb fell.
Sometimes what we think is not true but we keep practicing the same routine hoping that it will work.
I see the same thing at work in the Church when it comes to fear. We are trained early and often to put up a façade that everything is OK and we are doing well. Regardless of the weight of the circumstance that we are facing we “duck and cover” with statements showing our bright and sunny side because that is how we are supposed to do it, for example …
‘God is good all the time, all the time God is good.’
‘Choosing to be great today.’
Etc.
Why do we have to pose ourselves as something that is not true in order to gain acceptance with our fellow believers? It does not make any more sense than the “duck and cover” exercise.
We fear what others will think about us. We fear that God will not come through. We fear that by not saying the right words in the right way that perhaps we will miss the magic formula that will make all things right. We follow practices that are well worn and comfortable but may be a band aid for a nuclear bomb. It will not work.
If there is trouble in your life. If the answer has not come. If there is pain and turmoil and no clear path to peace. If you have sought God with your whole heart and still do not get it please do not give up. Also, please do not hide your situation because of fear.
Love can deal with anything that is brought into the light. Anything that is brought into the light of God’s presence will be seen for what it truly is. If it is a lie it will be exposed and lose its power over you. If it is something to be prayed through then He will give you the path and the words to pray.
We need to trust Him in every situation and know that fear and lies will not protect us but will ultimately destroy us. We need to confess our sins one to another that we might be healed.
Fear is sin. Confession kills sin.
Now that is a technique that can be relied on and is effective.
Thank God with us for these reports of the results seen by people who were praying in an effective ways over the past month …
REPORTS:
• A woman asked for prayer for her daughter due to a severe rash. One of the intercessors heard “vitamin D” as they prayed. The woman got some Vitamin D and used it and the rash went away. Thank You Lord for direction is in all things. • A woman went for prayer at a church in Lansing and as she was being prayed for her leg (that was 1.5 inches shorter than the other leg) grew out in front of her eyes. God, You really are amazing. • A man came to the conference in Lake Odessa and went home understanding he could pray differently. A friend had asked for prayer due to nerve pain. She had gone through three surgeries over the past year on her back having rods placed in her back to correct a scoliosis. One of the operations had resulted in a nerve being cut. The nerve pain was unaffected by medication and the Doctors said there was nothing that could be done and she would have this pain the rest of her life. The man went to her house and prayed in a new way speaking to the pain and commanding that it leave in the name of Jesus. The pain left and she has been pain free for over three weeks. Now that is a big God! • A man was working outside his house and the basketball hoop fell over on his daughter. She was in pain so he prayed for her and as he prayed the pain left. Father, You hear us when we cry. • Two business guys were with a State regulator regarding a business deal and one of them was prompted to pray to the regulator regarding a physical ailment. The man agreed to allow prayer and afterward commented that he was blown away by the prayer and the result because the pain was gone. Thank You Lord for showing us how to minister effectively wherever we are. • Two people from the “W” have received Loan Modifications in the past week. We bless you Lord for Your provision in difficult times. • A story came in via email; Hi Ted, Do you remember praying for our friend <name> who came to the W with his wife , his pastor, and an elder ? They came from a Reformed Church in Muskegon. <He> had lung cancer. We visited him a few weeks ago and he seemed to be doing well. He is undergoing chemo . Before coming to the W he e-mailed us that he was in "serious despair" because the doctor had told him that he had about a year to live. Since coming to the W he has been very encouraged. He said the W was awesome and said that Tina should have her own ministry - she talked and prayed with them for about 1/2 hour after you left. <He> said that his pastor was totally excited about the W and what he learned there, that he is now praying in a different way. Russ said that a few times the pastor had him come to the front of the church and the people prayed over him - I'm assuming the pastor prayed in the "new" way. <Our friend> said they want to come to the W again sometime . It was great to see him doing well. Father, You do Your work in Your way and we thank You. • An man came up to me in the grocery store and said “your book and the stories about what God is doing and wants to do has changed my life. I am praying differently and my relationship with God is now amazing. Thank you.” Father, we know that all of this is because You still work today so thanks goes to You. • A man was injured at work by being struck across the knees with a chain and was in pain for a few days. As he walked into the “W” the pain left. Yes!!! • the mother of a young man we prayed for at the Conference last August who was in a wheelchair due to an auto accident stopped by the “W” to give us an update. Her son was in a semi-vegetative state and had been for five years. When he was prayed for he began to make sounds and that night actually said the word “no” for the first time since the accident. Since then he has gotten progressively better and last month actually walked 92 steps with his Therapist. The hospital where he is being treated does not believe he will recover and decided to increase the chemical dosage that would continue the semi-comatose state so the parents (who are now praying differently) spoke against the effects from the drugs and broke off any ill effects in the name of Jesus. He has not seen any diminishing of alertness and continues to get better. What a mighty God we serve.
Here are some additional things to be aware of as WT members; * Please pray for a community wide prayer meeting called The Gathering (this Sunday 4-25-2010 @ DeVos Place). You can view the guiding principles and a general outline of the service on the website here. Some people have asked who is mc'ing this event so we thought we would note that various pastors and leaders who have been able to be involved with the planning will be introducing the event as well as the particular prayer time, no one person will lead the event. Because we want the focus to be on Jesus and his united body, their names, churches or positions will not be announced.
Claudia and I will be there and look forward to seeing you as well on Sunday.
* Please continue to pray for Ted and Claudia and the OMWB as they speak and minister; > April 23rd Ted will be leading devotions for the Staff @ Potter’s House School > April 26th OMWB doing worship for a banquet in Holland, MI > May 9th Ted speaking and OMWB doing the worship @ Christ Harvest Ministries in Big Rapids, MI AM service > May 23rd and 30th Ted will be speaking at Sunfield United Methodist Church for a community wide meeting also called The Gathering. Worship will be by Old Man Worship Band. These are Sunday evening events and will begin at 7PM. > June 26th OMWB playing @ the Bethany Christian Services Picnic in GR.
The May team leaders for the Sunday Wrestling Team activities will continue to be Steve and Ruth Zwierzinski and Joe Martino. They will be “on the ground” before and during the services to assist with any questions or prayer needs that might come up. Wrestling Coaches
